A Winter Equinox

In the aftermath of last month's fire at Equinox restaurant, chef-owner Todd Gray was confident he could quickly get his iconic restaurant (and Obama favorite) back on its feet. He was more concerned, however, about the local farms that depend on his business, particularly in these months when parsnips are more abundant than peaches.

Lucky for his farmers--and you--Gray and his team will bring the Equinox dining experience to your home by serving a private dinner made with ingredients from his favorite purveyors.

Gray uses the intimate setup to open a dialogue about local food--without proselytizing. (The dishes he'll serve--rich agnolotti stuffed with Middleburg chestnuts or 90-day dry-aged strip loin from Martin's Angus Beef in The Plains--will speak for themselves.) As much of the prep work is done in advance, Gray's team can maneuver even the tiniest (and jankiest) of kitchens.

Depending on the size of your party--they can feed just about any size gathering--Gray can deploy varying numbers of chefs, servers, dishwashers (even pastry chef Tom Wellings). They can also provide table decorations and dishware for those with sparser setups. The price varies depending on number of people and courses, but is competitive with local catering companies.

Rick’s Café, Negril, Jamaica

The Scene: Grab your camera before heading to this scenic beach bar. Not only is Rick’s Café known as one of the best places to watch a sunset in the Caribbean, it’s also famous for its gutsy (some say crazy) cliff diving, which goes on right next to the bar. Even though signs warn patrons not to take the plunge, it happens all the time. For more than 30 years, owner Richard Hershman has worked hard to keep Rick’s hopping, including rebuilding after four hurricanes decimated the place.
Signature Drink: Rick’s Famous Planter’s Punch, with a secret mix of rum and fruit juices; $4.
Don’t Miss: Watching the local “diving troupe” and bar customers soar off the cliffs.

Infiniti Bar, Grace Bay Club, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

The Scene: Chic and sleek, this swanky newcomer, decorated with blazing blue and gold Bisazza glass mosaic tiles, was designed by Keith Hobbs of United Designers, known for his work with Nobu and London’s W Hotel. You shouldn’t have trouble finding a seat here, because according to Grace Bay, this is the longest bar in the Caribbean. The black marble construction stretches 90 feet across the beach and true to its name, Infiniti, seems to extend indefinitely into the ocean.
Signature Drink: The Infiniti Martini, Hpnotiq, Malibu rum, and pineapple juice; $13.
Don’t Miss: Grabbing the best seat in the house to watch a sunset at the end of the bar closest to the water.

Soggy Dollar Bar, Jost Van Dyke, BVI

The Scene: Just steps from the water’s edge, this simple shack has walls covered with quirky sandcastle murals and only 10 wooden stools at the bar. Wander a few feet down the beach and you’ll find plenty of hammocks and beach chairs, where you can sip one of the Soggy Dollar Painkiller rum drinks, now a famous Caribbean cocktail. Dating to the early 70s, this watering hole is a favorite with sailors because until recently the only way you could get here was to swim ashore from a boat (the owners recently added a road).
Signature Drink: The Painkiller, dark rum, cream of coconut, and juices, sprinkled with fresh grated nutmeg; $6.
Don’t Miss: Chilling out on a hammock before swimming back to your boat.

Basil’s Bar, Mustique Island, West Indies

The Scene: Sitting over the Caribbean on bamboo stilts, with a thatched roof and Balinese décor, this formerly tiny rum shack has expanded over the last 30 years, hosting everyone from Academy Award winners to royalty. Owner Basil Charles says the place is as laid back as it gets; it opens at 8 a.m. 365 days a year and closes “when the last man falls.”
Signature Drink: Hurricane David, vodka, two rums, Crème de Cocoa, and lime juice; $10.
Don’t Miss: Ordering the house special, fresh lobster, or trying the banana pancakes for breakfast.

Azure Beach Bar, CuisinArt Resort & Spa, Anguilla, British West Indies

The Scene: This small, picturesque resort beach bar gives a taste of the Mediterranean in the Caribbean—the owner built the property to resemble the Greek island of Mykonos. With a panoramic view of the Caribbean, the breezy outdoor bar is bathed in whitewashed décor, with sparkly blue tiles. Fresh ingredients for the cocktails (basil, sage, cucumbers, and tomatoes) come from the resort’s own hydroponic farm.
Signature Drink: Pyrat Pineapple Punch, with Pyrat Pistol rum, Galliano, apricot brandy, and tropical juices; $16.
Don’t Miss: Chatting with the head bartender, Garvey Lakes, a local musician who can tell you the best places to get your groove on in Anguilla.

Frangipani Beach Bar, Bequia, Grenadines

The Scene: Fabulous at more than 40 years old, the low-key Frangipani Bar on Bequia continues to make waves by serving up creative, affordable cocktails (it’s $4 for the house special, the Frangi Fever). This is one tough beach bar to leave—just ask Oprah Winfrey, David Bowie, and Harrison Ford, who have all visited. Maybe it’s the comfy, cushion-topped bar stools, the friendly service, or the bar itself, which is made with a gorgeous local hardwood called purpleheart.
Signature Drink: Frangi Fever, with rum, orange juice, ginger ale, cinnamon, and angostura bitters; $4.

Dune Preserve, Anguilla, British West Indies

The Scene: Using pieces of shipwrecked racing boats and washed-up driftwood, owner Bankie Banx and his best friend, Bullett, built the Dune Preserve in 1994. Four hurricanes later, the landscape has changed, but the spirit of the bar is still going strong, and it’s been the site of live performances by Jimmy Buffett and Kevin Bacon. “It’s the only beach bar in the world where you are likely to run into a former president, a former pirate, and a former Wall Street bigwig all in the same day,” says the Dune’s business manager, Olaide Banx, noting that Bill Clinton has swung by twice.

Foxy’s Beach Bar, Jost Van Dyke, BVI
The Scene: If you’re looking for a party, Foxy’s is always raging with nonstop entertainment, whether you’re listening to Foxy, the charming owner, spin one of his fascinating tales or rocking out to live music. General manager Paul Mason says the infamous hangout attracts “superstars, boat bums, schooner trash, and everyone in between.” The bar itself is made from old driftwood, and the walls and ceiling are plastered with personal paraphernalia, including license plates, T-shirts, caps, calling cards, and underwear. “You can’t help but get in the party mode here,” says Mason.
Signature Drink: The Dread Fox, with Foxy’s Firewater Rum, sour mix, and cranberry juice; $6.
Don’t Miss: Foxy’s small brewery behind the bar, where you can feed a carrot (bring your own, if you’re good at planning ahead) to Lagerhead, Foxy’s donkey OR their full moon party!

The Scene: This 15-year-old hot spot is named after Piet, a Dutch sailor who used to travel the world and bring his maps back to the bar to show everyone where he’d been. Meranti wood makes up the bar itself, and bright, colorful umbrellas and loungers cover a deck that’s always jumping with a lively cocktail crowd.
Signature Drink: Aruba Ariba, with vodka, rum, banana liqueur, and Grand Marnier; $8.75.
Don’t Miss: Nightly karaoke, where the bartenders join in. The more you drink, the better everyone sounds.

da Conch Shack & RumBar, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

The Scene: With picnic tables right on Blue Hill Beach, this locals’ favorite is as laid back as it gets. Another big draw is the fresh conch that’s kept in pens on the water’s edge. If you’re on a serious cocktail mission, try the Shipwreck, but be careful that you’re not left stranded on the beach.
Signature Drink: ConchKnocker, with a blend of rums and a secret ingredient; $3.50.

Deadman’s Beach Bar, Peter Island, BVI

The Scene: Don’t let the name scare you off. Sure, legend has it Blackbeard marooned 15 mutinous men nearby and it didn’t end pretty (rum and a sword were involved), but that just makes this Caribbean hideaway more interesting. The bar, camouflaged by sea grape trees, towering palms, and a cedar shake roof, also gets special kudos for allowing passing sailors to stop by for a drink even though this is an exclusive private island.

French interior designer Christian Liaigre created a classy British colonial feel that’s topped off by a pristine white marble bar. Is Autumn not the best time of year? The crisp fall days, the sound of a crackling fire, great fall getaways and...cocktails! Here are few cocktail recipes that will surely make Autumn your favorite season!

Hot Rasapple-Rum Cider
By Stephen Phillips

The cozy and warm aroma of this cider not only fills the room but possibly the soul as well.

Ingredients:

1 cup apple cider (use organic if you can)
1-1/2 oz. Mount Gay rum
1 oz. raspberry syrup
1 tsp. Chambord (a raspberry-flavored liqueur)
1 Tbs. grated orange zest
3 whole cloves
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cardamom
Whipped cream
Ground cinnamon

Preparation:

Add cider raspberry syrup, orange zest, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom into a small saucepan. Heat but do not boil. When steam begins to rise, remove the cloves. Pour the mixture into a coffee mug. Add rum and stir.

Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream. Drizzle top of cream with Chambord and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Marvelous Mulled Wine

This mulled wine tastes just like the kind my mama used to make. Now don't forget the ladle, and you're ready to enjoy this centuries-old delight.

Serves 10.

Ingredients:

2 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon
1/2 cup brown sugar
12 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
2 cups port (a sweet Portuguese wine)
2 cups brandy

Preparation:

Combine all the ingredients, except the port and brandy, into a large copper or cast-iron pot (not aluminum). Simmer while stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add port and brandy. Heat for 30 seconds. Pour all into a large heat-resistant bowl or leave it in the pot.

Texican Tailgate Hot Cocoa

When the temperature drops below 30 degrees, keep your tailgaters warm with this hot drink from longtime Lone Star State tailgater Sharon Hyland. Remember, making the hot chocolate from scratch is the key. Sure, you can use the powdered kind, but, hey, making it yourself is half the fun. Serves two.

Ingredients:

4 oz. of light rum, silver tequila or Kahlua
1 cup whole milk
1 cup half-and-half
6 tsp. of sugar
1 oz. semisweet chocolate chopped into small pieces
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate chopped into small pieces
1 Tbs. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cinnamon sticks

Preparation:

I suggest that you prepare this the morning of the event, storing and then serving it out of an insulated container at the tailgate site.

The morning before leaving for the event:

Mix milk, half-and-half, sugar, finely chopped chocolate and brown sugar all together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Do not bring to a boil, but allow chocolate and sugar to melt and dissolve until they get hot. Reduce heat. Place half of this mixture into a blender and mix to a frothy consistency. Pour this back into your pan and stir in the vanilla extract.

At the tailgate party site:

Fill your partygoers' cups with 2 ounces of rum, tequila or Kahlua. Pour in hot chocolate from thermos or jug. Stir with a cinnamon stick.

Pumpkin Pie Martini

Two thumbs up for this creamy drink! The pumpkin pie taste with less calories.

Single Serve

Ingredients:

1/2 oz. Stoli Vanilla (optional to give it kick)
1 oz. Pumpkin Spice liqueur (such as Hiram Walker)
1/2 oz. Kahlua
1/2 oz. Butterscotch Schnapps
1/2 oz. half-and-half
Crushed graham crackers
Cinnamon stick (garnish)

Preparation:

Add all liquids in a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into large martini glass rimmed with crushed graham crackers. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Cranberry Hot Toddy

This holiday cocktail is perfect for warming up (especially for those leaping into cold water to save Jimmy Stewart).

Serves 3-4

Ingredients:

6 oz. cranberry vodka (I prefer Stoli)
1 pint cranberry juice
2 oz. fresh lemon juice
3 tsp. honey
6 dashes angostura bitters
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Cinnamon stick (garnish)

Preparation:

In a medium sauce pan heat all the ingredients (except the vodka) to just about the boiling point. Let stand for 1 minute. Add cranberry vodka and stir. Pour into a heat-resistant cocktail glass and garnish with a strawberry.

Chai Yai Yai

The name of this hot toddy is what you'll be saying after you experience this velvety and aromatic winter drink.

Ingredients:

1 tea bag chai tea
8 oz. hot water
3 oz. milk
1 oz. bourbon
1/4 oz. amaretto (an almond-flavored liqueur)
1/4 oz. Grand Marnier (an orange-flavored liqueur)
Lemon wedge
3 whole cloves

Preparation:

Brew tea in 8 ounces of hot water for three to four minutes. Remove tea bag. In a saucepan, combine the tea mixture and milk and simmer, stirring occasionally. Pour into a coffee mug. Add bourbon, amaretto and Grand Marnier. Stir briefly. Stud lemon wedge with the cloves and add to mixture.

As warm days give way to cool autumn nights, trade in hot-weather cocktail standbys like mojitos and margaritas for warming toddies, teas and ciders brimming with the flavors of fall.

Escape Artists has a time line that will definitely help you get started!

At 12 months:
• Choose a destination.
• If you're tying the knot in a foreign country, check into legal requirements.
• If necessary, apply for your visas, and schedule immunizations.
• Hire a wedding coordinator. Get referrals from friends, family, or the Association of Bridal Consultants (bridalassn.com).
• Send save-the-date cards to all of your guests.
• Estimate how many guests will attend, and talk to your wedding coordinator about blocking off hotel rooms and helping you negotiate special airfare discounts.
• Ask your wedding coordinator to recommend an officiant, photographer, hairstylist, florist, caterer, band, or DJ, and a few locations for the ceremony.
• Request musicians' tapes or CDs, and have photographers and florists send you samples of their wedding work. (Your coordinator can arrange this.)

At 4 months:
• Visit the site before you confirm your choices for flowers, menu, music, photographer, and hairstylist.
• Plan a few events for guests, such as a welcome party or a golf tournament. But don't feel like you have to fill every minute they're there.

With its manicured gardens, fountains and reflecting pools, the Hotel Hershey is the delicious center of a romantic resort. Its European-style spa is ground zero for indulgence.

The signature treatment - it's patented, no less - says it all: a whipped cocoa bath. Or say, for instance, that you or your partner has been less than delectable lately; you can book a chocolate fondue wrap for two. You're in love, you're committed, and now you've decided to take the big step that says "I'm yours/you're mine." Congratulations! Before you seal the deal though, get your financial affairs in order. Why? Because among the chief reasons couples often split are fights over issues that deal with money.

Here are 10 tips that will ensure you start off on sound financial footing before you co-mingle your finances with those of your prospective partner:

1. Check your credit report: Is it accurate? If not, take steps to have the record set straight. “A good credit rating means you and your partner can buy that house or furniture.” A good credit rating means you and your partner can buy that house or furniture.

2. Put a cap on credit card limits: If you leave yours open-ended it might be too tempting to spend, spend, spend. And soon it will be the two of you buying things!

3. If either of you own a business, assess its value. Regardless of whether the business is large or small, knowing what it is worth is important. Get a business appraiser to help you with this one. The two of you may want to grow this business, but knowing its worth and projected worth could be valuable.

4. If either of you have real estate, assess its value. How much equity do you have? Find out. You and yours might want to use it to buy a bigger place.

5. If either or both of you have pension plans, 401Ks, or IRAs, you need to know what they are worth today and inquire as to what they will be worth when you and your partner want to kick back and retire one day. Keep contributing to these plans.

6. Prepare a reasonable budget: “Tally up what it's been costing you to live alone on a monthly basis.” Tally up what it's been costing you to live alone on a monthly basis. Now, do it again with your partner in mind because soon you will be living on a budget for two! What's your new bottom line?

January 14th-20th, 2008 - Barbados Jazz Festival

February 5th-11th, 2008 - Sapporo Snow Festival, Japan

The Sapporo Snow festival is magnificent and an event not to be missed. In Japanese it is called the Sapporo Yuki Matsuri. It is one of the largest winter events in Japan and is an absolute gem. If you have the opportunity to go to Sapporo City at this time of year, make sure you take it. The Sapporo Snow Festival began spontaneously - in 1950 a group of 6 local high school students decided to build snow scuptures in Odori Koen.

Sapporo City consolidated international interest by starting the International Snow Statue Competition in 1974, which has become one of the most popular sections of the festival, not only amongst Japanese visitors, but amongst the all important overseas media. There are now usually about 2 dozen teams from nearly as many countries participating each year, even from places such as Australia, Hawaii and Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore.

Today the festival has grown to become the biggest winter attraction in Hokkaido drawing more than 2 million visitors each year.

February 23rd-March 2nd, 2008 - Tango Festival - Buenos Aires, Argentina

As the poet Luis Alposta once said “Tango is, essentially, an art of synthesis.” From its earliest days as an alehouse dance among the poor dock workers of Buenos Aires, the tango has symbolized the raw, steaming, erotic tension that passes between man and woman, no matter what era, social class or religion.

From February 23rd to March 2nd, delve deep down into Buenos Aires where the rhythms of tango take over the streets for a seven day fiesta of heart racing music, sensual dancing tango couples, valses and milongas long into the night. Everyone who's anyone in the world of tango performs for the loving public, many free dancing displays featuring world renowned artists are held at venues all over the city and the best orchestras from Buenos Aires will be offering their live music.

For those who want to join in, there are tango classes for beginners and masterclasses for the more experienced dancers, all for free.

March 15th-19th,2008 - Fallas Festival - Valencia, Spain

Does the smell of gunpowder excite you? Does the sight of flames make you smile? Do you harbor pyrotechnic urges that are only socially acceptable on the Fourth of July? Well, Las Fallas de Valencia is your kind of event--a loud, smoky, rowdy fiesta where the whole town is literally set ablaze!

Las Fallas is undoubtedly one of the most unique and crazy festivals in Spain (a country known for unique and crazy festivals). What started as a feast day for St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, has evolved into a 5-day, multifaceted celebration of fire. Valencia is usually a quiet city with a population of a half-million, but the town swells to an estimated three million flame-loving revelers during Las Fallas.

Passport Reminder

Although the requirements for international travel has always been the same (passports required)...please remember that new U.S. passport rules go into effect today (Oct. 1). Starting now, American citizens returning by air from Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico must carry a valid passport to re-enter the country. That rule was scheduled to take effect earlier this year, but it was waived temporarily due to major passport processing delays.

The new requirement that Americans returning home by sea from these regions must also carry a valid passport (or proof of citizenship [such as an official birth certificate] plus a government-issued ID [such as a driver’s license]) will take effect Jan. 31, 2008.

Destination Spotlight: Sivory Punta Cana

Our first destination spotlight will be Sivory Punta Cana. People tend to think that Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is all about fabulous all-inclusive properties. I'll agree that it used to be...until now!

It's been a crazy summer and I apologize that we've taken so long between posts. We've been working hard and trying to fit in some vacation time as well.

We're gearing up for fall and winter travel. There are so many places to go and so little time. For those of you who didn't want to fight the crowds of Europe in the summer, fall is the perfect time to go...no crowds and better prices to boot.

Instead of getting the winter blues, you can experience the blue skies and blue waters of the Caribbean this winter. A warm beach getaway is just what the doctor ordered! Coming next week...our first spotlight destination!

I'm so excited...I've finally posted Escape Artists' first blog! My name is Danielle and I'm the CEO/Owner of Escape Artists, LLC...A Travel Concierge Firm that specializes in destination weddings and honeymoons. This blog will be a glimpse into the world of planning the first trip of your happily ever after!

A little about me: I've been a travel consultant for over 8 years and started Escape Artists in 2005. It's the best thing I've ever done! I'm happy and my dog is even happier to have me around more....seeing as he's my new office mascot.
